Seminar on Buddhist and Shaiva Rock-art by Pia Brancaccio
In April and May prof. Pia Brancaccio (Drexel University, Philadelphia) held a seminar on “Between Buddhism and Shaivism: Art, rock-art architecture, and religious tradition in ancient Konkan” (with sessions in Italian and English).
It explored Shaiva and Buddhist religious traditions through art and rock-art architecture in ancient Konkan (Maharashtra, India). Along with prof. Brancaccio, colleagues and students explored the art and history of the archeological sites of Ellora and Elephanta, the caves in Aurangabad and Dhokeshvara and the monasteries at Kanheri and Panhale Kaji, and the ancient sites of Sopara and Kalyan in today’s Maharashtra.
